Chapter 1
"There's no right or wrong here.
There's only those who come out on top,
And those who go out blazing."
This was his hunting grounds. Here was a canvas, sprinkled with neon and dust, a canopy so thick even the full embrace of the silver moon held no significance, no comfort for the alley rats. A city of the rich and the poor, the powerful and the weak. There was no better way to describe other than an urban jungle in its purest form, filled with both predator and prey. Here, survival was the name of the game.Survival, and glory. Both of which the Runner known only as 'Flou' sought to obtain that fateful evening.See, though it was indeed the mayor - Lucian Hawkins - that was the face of Luminary City, everyone knew that that obese silver-haired fox was naught more than a puppet. And the puppeteer was none other than the mega-corporation, the biggest entity in this godforsaken city, Lacaille Corporation. Named after a star, they had long sold themselves as the 'beacon of hope' for this city, the 'guiding light' to the future. The thought made Flou retch. What a bunch of self-righteous pompous assholes. Their words couldn't be further from the truth. They had their greedy little fingers in almost every aspect of Luminary City. As they say, nothing major ever happens in the city, without Lacaille's mark on it somehow - even if they do well in erasing their tracks, ensuring that nothing ever comes back to bite them in the ass. They were untouchable, all-powerful, all-knowing.And they were about to get robbed that evening. The golden eyes of the hunter peered towards the factory on the opposite side of the road, veiled by the shadows of the alley he was positioned. It was manned and guarded, of course. Spotlights. Sentry turrets. Armored - and armed - guards. Security systems too, that he was probably going to have to brute-force his way through. See, clever and resourceful as he was, Flou was no hacker, no. He preferred the term 'specialist'. He was no hacker. At least, not to the level that could tussle against Lacaille's security systems. And he had no one to aid him. That was perhaps the riskiest - and of course, the gloriest - part of this entire endeavor. He was going to rob Lacaille's factory of all of its classified data, under their very nose, and he was going to run it solo. Of course, it was a job, and he had been offered quite a sum for the databank that he'd be procuring, but the temptation of being the first - and only - to survive after having crossed Lacaille? Now that, that was the real prize. He smirked, resting a hand upon the side of his neck. A leftward jerk, and then a rightward, he loosened the knots in his neck. Well, no time like the present. He was going to have to be extra cunning about this. Find an alternative route. For such a large factory, there was definitely more than one way to get past the guards, right? "Hm," he pondered, golden irises darting about the walls, and all the security visible. Hmm..."Oi," a gruff voice from behind him snatched his attention, and the runner glanced over his shoulder. There, standing behind him was a large burly male, bald and bearded, clad in a leather jacket under a black shirt. Bloodshot eyes glared down upon Flou, with the scowl on his face and the dirty rusted knife in his hand making clear what his intentions were."Hand over whatever ya have on ya, and n-no one has to get hurt."He was stuttered. Sweating. His eyes were diluted. A druggie, huh? Flou blinked. And that was when a light bulb flicked on in his head. His lips pulled back into a toothy smirk. Now, now, this could be useful. "Say, buddy," Flou started as he turned on the heels of his boots, his fur-collared jacket swaying to the spin. "Why don't we make a deal, huh?" He cooed, stretching both arms out as if offering an embrace, as he closed the distance between them with purposeful steps. The man's eyes widened, as he retreated a step, before lifting his knife higher."I'm serious!" he hissed. Flou only scoffed, as he continued his approach. And that was all the warnings the mugger could spare, before he stepped forward, shakily thrusting his knife at Flou. His outstretched right hand immediately swung inwards, slapping the back of the man's wrist mid-flight, pushing it to the side and away from his chest. And with that threat cleared, he slid his right foot forward, across the wet floor of the alley, the back of his gloved palm slamming right into the man's nose.Disgruntled, his head snapped back, though only for a moment, as Flou grabbed him by the beard, and tugged him back down, holding him level to his face. That grin remained plastered upon his lips."Let's have a little talk."
